The most significant finding from Brené’s latest research is that courage is a collection of four skill sets that are teachable, measurable, and observable. ALSDE, in partnership with Cognia, developed the Alabama Teacher Observation Tool which features five dimensions of teacher effectiveness: culture/climate, learning, essentials, agency, and relationships. This professional learning unit aims to study two of these dimensions more deeply, culture/climate and relationships, to determine how they align with student achievement in schools.

APLDS - RIC (UA-UWA): 2025-26 BAMA STOP School Violence Program
BAMA-STOP School Violence is a program committed to reducing and preventing school violence by equipping Behavior Threat Assessment (BTA) teams with the knowledge and tools needed to manage potential threats. Participating schools have appointed a diverse group of staff members—including teachers, administrators, counselors, and school resource officers—to serve on their BTA teams. These teams will engage in six comprehensive trainings and workshops, organized by the BAMA-STOP team in collaboration with leading experts in field of threat assessment.
